Health Education, Multimedia Development & Graphic Design

Mary has extensive experience from research grants such as developing CD-ROM programs to educate elementary and middle school children about sun safety and skin cancer prevention, and developing computer-based programs to disseminate the 5 A Day nutrition education program to worksite wellness professionals and employees via the Internet. She was also the primary author and editor of the Sunny Days Healthy Ways sun protection curriculum for grades K through 5.
From 1998 to 2001, she founded and directed the American Sun Protection Association (ASPA), a nonprofit trade association for the sun protection industry. She is a member of the Colorado Public Health Association, the International Communication Association, the Skin Cancer Prevention Task Force of the American School Health Association, the Colorado Cancer Coalition, the American Society for Testing and Materials (sun protective fabrics) and the President-Elect of the Colorado School Health Council.
Mary received her Masters degree in Speech Communication from Texas Tech University in 1985. Prior to co-founding Klein Buendel, she was president of Partners For Health Systems, Inc. (an affiliate of AMC Cancer Research Center), which successfully competed for over 2.4 million dollars of research grant money from the National Cancer Institute.

Aimee guides the Klein Buendel creative team in the design of all print, web and CD-based projects. The creative group contains full-time professionals trained in graphic design, multimedia development, instructional design, and audio/video production.
Aimee has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida and has worked in the advertising and design field for 15 years. Prior to teaming up with Mary to form Klein Buendel, Aimee was the Creative Director at AMC Cancer Research Center for four years, as well as the Art Director for Total Petroleum in Denver. She and her team have developed print and interactive computer-based media for dozens of state and federally funded grant projects and commercial clients.

Andrea graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Communication, as well as a minor in Journalism and Mass Communication. At KB, she will be in charge of keeping track of our thousands of documents, publications, articles, journals, references, and books that we need immediate access to just about every day.

Former Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University, Erv has been a leader in researching and teaching communication since the early 50's. He has served on several national advisory committees helping to guide the U.S. cancer programs and policies, including a presidential appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board for the National Cancer Institute.
Working with scientists from Colorado State University and Johns Hopkins University, he is currently researching the news media and its influence on the general public's perceptions of cancer risk.

David is an expert in health communication, conducting research sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1979. David was previously a Professor at the University of Arizona, a Senior Scientist at AMC Cancer Research Center, and the Harold Simmons Senior Scientist for Health Communication and Vice President of The Cooper Institute - Denver.
Many of David's current projects are centered on educating targeted groups about relatively small changes they can make in their lives that can save them from years of chronic illnesses. Avoiding extreme sun exposure, developing healthier eating habits, and avoiding cigarette smoke are the focus of some of David's most recent and successful programs. His Sunny Days Healthy Ways program has been recognized as a national resource for complying with the CDC and American Cancer Society's recommendations for skin cancer education.

Rachel earned her Associates Degree from Red Rock Community College and previously worked at AMC Cancer Research Center as an Administrative Assistant. Her work there with the grant preparation teams gave her excellent experience for her current role of Research Assistant, coordinating several grant projects at KB.

Former Director of Behavioral Science Research at The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, Andrea earned her Doctorate in Exercise Science from the University of Georgia and was a post doctorate fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Andrea is a Fellow on the American College of Sports Medicine, serves on the Board of Trustees, is a Fellow in the Society for Behavioral Medicine, and member of the American Public Health Association and International Society for Nutrition and Physical Activity.
Andrea's research focuses on physical activity interventions and how they can be used to treat depression and prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Erika graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition and has also earned a teaching certificate from the University of Colorado at Denver. Before coming to Klein Buendel, Erika worked in the department of nutrition at the Children's Hospital of Denver. At KB, she works as a research assistant on various health education projects, adding her knowledge to the benefit of KB's current nutrition programs.

Steve received a Fine Arts degree from Baylor University, with a concentration in Graphic Design. Before joining Klein Buendel, he worked in the offset printing industry for five years doing computer graphics and production work. At KB, Steve designs graphics and oversees layout of print, web and CD-based projects.

Since receiving his Bachelors degree in graphic design from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Bryan has worked in the graphic design, marketing and advertising field for over ten years. Most recently, he was the Creative Manager for Bullwhackers Casinos in Black Hawk, Colorado. He joins KB to work on a multitude of projects focusing on the multimedia aspects of KB's grants.

Kathy has worked as a Financial Administrative Assistant/Office Manager for over 15 years in the medical environment. She was previously employed at Deaconess Medical Center, Eureka Family Practice and Wyoming Medical Center. Her past experience includes a variety of financial functions including Payroll, A/P, A/R. At KB she will assist the Accounting Manager in the financial operations of the company.

Kristy graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL with a degree in Psychology and Biology. She joined AMC Cancer Research Center in January 2001 and Partners for Health Systems (an affiliate of AMC Cancer Research Center) in February 2002 where she worked extensively on sun safety curricula for elementary and middle school students. At KB, she builds database applications, assists in the development and testing of survey instruments, manages all project data, and prepares data files for statisticians to analyze.

Chris has worked in the IT field for over 10 years and is certified in Microsoft, Cisco and Novell. Prior to joining KB, he worked for AMC Cancer Research Center, where he designed and implemented network systems. He has extensive experience in setting up Internet connectivity, as well as web server administration.

Eric has worked in the print/graphics field for 16 years and has earned an Associate Degree in Graphic Art from the Community College of Denver as well as a Certificate in Multimedia Technology from Front Range Community College. At KB, Eric serves as webmaster for several KB project sites as well as assisting in the development and production of interactive CDs and web sites.

Jill has worked as an Administrative Assistant for over 20 years at a variety of industries in Denver and San Diego, including oil and gas exploration, architectural, computer software companies, and the corporate office for a fast food restaurant chain. Jill joined Partners for Health Systems (an affiliate of AMC Cancer Research Center) in June 2001 and moved with the rest of the group to Klein Buendel in June 2002.

Ilima graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Environmental Health and has also earned a certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Colorado at Denver. She spent two years working with health departments developing educational brochures. For the next few years, Ilima worked at Partners For Health Systems, Inc., where she helped develop, implement, and evaluate health education products. Now at KB, she coordinates the production of computer-based health education tools.

Myra most recently worked as the Grants Manager for Northwest Folklife in Seattle, WA, a regional folk arts organization that produces one of the nation’s largest free outdoor music festivals. She has a Master of Arts in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and has a background in arts and education administration, research-based staff development, as well as teaching experience in language arts, social studies and English as a second language. Myra will be using her many talents to help keep the KB grant funding pipeline full at all times, as well as contributing to project development.

Steven applies his Adobe Flash expertise to the programming of interactive activities and applications for KB multimedia products. He attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design (RMCAD) and worked towards a degree in illustration. Before joining KB, Steven worked as a freelance website programmer and graphic designer. He also has two years of sales and customer service experience.

Lucia Liu graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst with Masters degrees in Educational Technology and Biostatistics. She previously worked at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, where she gained extensive experience in analyzing large complex clinical trial data. Lucia currently works as a Statistician at KB and is directly responsible for developing statistical programs and analyzing and interpreting data for health research.

Julie Maloy holds bachelor’s degrees in biology and medical technology and received a master’s degree in biometrics from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1997. She currently works as a statistician at Klein Buendel. She has held similar positions at the AMC Cancer Research Center and The Cooper Institute. Throughout her career, Julie has primarily been involved in analyzing randomized studies in health communication research.

Rob began his career over 20 years ago creating Optical Special Effects. He jumped to the computer 10 years ago to produce multimedia applications, ranging from an award-winning daily interactive news journal for kids to a touch screen presentation system. Rob is also the co-author of the Director 8 and Lingo Bible. At KB, Rob leads the multimedia group in developing projects for web, video, and CD-ROM.

Andrea (Dre) graduated from Colorado State University, earning a Bachelors in Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting. In addition to showing her artwork since 1998, she most recently worked as a program assistant for the Center for Children with Special Needs at Seattle Children's Hospital where she managed their website and helped finalize reports and resource guides for and about children with special needs. Ms. McCullough currently works on the Active Living Everyday Dissemination grant.

Laura graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelors degree in Journalism and has worked on health related research for the past 5 years. Her experience has included project development, coordination, quality control/process improvement, and regulatory compliance. Laura is essential to keeping the flow and flood of KB's awarded grants cruising along just the way they were meant to.

Deva earned a B.A. in Communication from the University of Colorado at Denver before joining KB as a Research Assistant. She also worked with some of KB’s other partners on projects such as Consider This and Go Sun Smart. Adding even more great experience to the mix, Deva is a certified Pilates instructor.

Katie went to Eastern Illinois University where she graduated with a BA in journalism and a minor in psychology. Most recently she worked as a political campaign manager and many other grassroots projects.

With a Bachelors of Science in computer science and a mathematics minor, plus experience as a database administrator, software support technician, and accessibility consultant at Metropolitan State College of Denver, James Shane is well suited to take on the job of Lead Programmer. James is responsible for quickly resolving any issues that may arise on projects, as well as helping develop and write code for multimedia CD-ROMs and interactive web sites.

Pam graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, but have always been involved in handling finances. She came to Klein Buendel from Duke University’s Center for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research where she handled the finances and grant management for almost 6 years. She's originally from Toledo, Ohio, and is a proud member of the Society of Research Administrators International.

Monica graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and more recently with a Masters in Public Health. Her thesis work consisted of developing and implementing an abstinence until marriage and a comprehensive sex education curriculum at a Denver Public High School. She has also worked with a web-based organization called TeenSmart International that works to reduce high risk behaviors among Hispanic adolescents through education. At KB, Monica works as a research assistant on the Internet Smoking Cessation Program.

Travis has seven years of programming experience in database and inventory management software and web design. Prior to joining KB, Travis worked for Star Optical and JMR Optical as Marketing Director and Programmer, and served as Data Analyst and Programmer for TMG Marketing. He is currently completing a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science at Metropolitan State College of Denver. At KB, Travis will add valuable experience to our programming team as well as supporting all KB programs at the Help Desk.

Snip s currently the Principal Investigator on a National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases grant, “Balancing InTake and Expenditure (BITE): A Planning, Project Management & Evaluation Website and a co-investigator on two National Cancer Institute sponsored projects. Previously, he was Director of the Colorado Department of Health's Prevention Programs Division, where he directed chronic disease prevention programs. His research interests include community tobacco control, chronic disease prevention and dissemination of effective public health programs.
